Combat drones (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles) are pilotless military aircraft designed for intelligence, surveillance, and tactical strikes. Ranging from stealthy, jet-powered "loyal wingmen" to loitering munitions, they utilize AI to bypass electronic warfare, operating as a cost-effective alternative to traditional cruise missiles.Modern military doctrine divides combat drones into three primary categories:
1. Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs)These are large, reusable, high-altitude platforms that perform intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR). They carry internal ordnance or wing-mounted missiles and can even engage in air-to-air combat.Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA): Advanced UCAVs (such as the General Atomics YFQ-42 Dark Merlin) function as autonomous "loyal wingmen," augmenting crewed fighter jets like the F-35 in, for example, the U.S. Air Force.
